No.41      "Love and Peace for the New Year"

To love one must be free to love
To create one must be free to create
Is creativity a form of love?

(December 31)
You wrote“If nothing remains the same” is an undeniable fact,
we do not posses
anything at all, do we?”
I underline
we do not posses. I think this where we get caught. In order to live in
normal life we must posses. I must have paint, brushes, paper, feelings,
thoughts, will, self, in order to paint and then, of course, the result is ‘mine’. And
out of such I make up my identity. When I hear someone say “George is an artist”
I polish my identity badge. “That’s me, an artist, I am an artist” It’s very helpful to
have an identity. How tedious it would be if every time someone asks you what
you do, you had to list everything you do.
But that identity is a kind of collection of past experience. When our self moves
into new experience we feel “is it mine? is it real?, and what is real, am I real?
That is our experience because self is expanding, growing, being itself, a growing
being.
So that idea” Mine” is a kind of temporary suitcase. Something to put our
collection of identities in to make it more convenient to move around in the world.
But we are not the suitcase.
You apologize for your confusing letter but I am grateful for a companion who can
be as confused as myself.
You say of your paintings that when they are finished you are really done with
them. You are finished. They are no longer yours, they belong to the world.
I think that is the healthy way.

(January 2, morning)
In your letter, after you have expressed such deep ponderings on the riddles of
existence, you say
“Endless questions…without answer.”
You know in Mecca there is that great stone and on the High Holy Day the
throngs of the people of Islam circle round about the stone making a human
wheel full of prayer?
That is how I feel when I approach this question. I go round and round it asking,
can I say the right word or should I remain silent. A wrong word can put a stone
in another’s path. But with all my heart I want to say to you Rin, there are
answers, but living ones, to these questions that you ask. I don’t want to indicate
that I have a basketful of ready answers to hand out because as you know, and
as you have seen my seeking, that I am a soul deeply questioning, but I only
wanted to ring a bell, a bell that says, ‘take hope, the wisdom of the world has
not left us orphans’…I often have to tell myself this.

(January 11, 2008)
Rin, you are a poet. It took me sometime but then “spider come along” took on
its meaning.
I don’t dare translate into other words.
It is perfect.
Things make more sense to me if we start with love (somewhere in the distant
future when human beings have matured to the point where they consciously love
one another) and work our way back to the present where Love and Peace are
deep (often hidden) longing of ones being. Otherwise one sees the world merged
in meaningless conflict.
And we, within our own self can say with greater patience ‘spider comes along’

My response this time is more general but full of heartfelt meaning.
“Love and Peace for the New Year”

Numerological, 2008 is a ONE year. Very few such years. A truly New year, last
one according to my calculations was 1900!

With much love and the hope of peace,

George
