Dear Rin,
Thank you for my compass. It is just what I need. Sometimes you know me
better than I know myself.
Always there is the invisible world alongside the visible one. The reason for a
journey is the journey itself. All that need is with me.
The pearl at the compass center holds all directions home.
Already the journey has begun.
I went to Olvera Street to buy a certain kind of Mexican sandal. As I was
leaving the street something happened that stopped me in my tracks.
A street singer, a woman, not young, and two musicians accompanying her,
a guitar and concertina. She was singing ballad. I did not understand the
words but the quality, richness, depth and pathos of her voice moved me. I
thought ‘Here is this excellent singer singing on the street, playing for tips,
passing the basket, how is this so?
She is the spice of the world. She has poured her life out for the world for a
Meager return. But why do I say Meager?
She imparts feeling, she gives the world life, as necessary as the sun and
the rain, a rich life, surely she must be blessed. To bless others one must
be blessed. She has been faithful and true. She has endured. The street is
her concert hall.
When I put my tip in the basket she thanked me warmly. I understood that
it was not for the tip what she spoke with her eyes but that I had
recognized her talent, what she lives for.
Such moments. The compass of transformation.
I take my magic compass with me, already guiding my way. We will find what
this life has to offer. And what we have to give.
Love and Peace,
George
