"letting the colors find their way"
by George (11/24/2006)

Dear Rin,
I have so many thoughts to you. Perhaps if I cannot express them all now I can
write another letter to complete them, but I do want to get your beautiful candle
back to you so that you can put it in the show at the gallery. I am pleased that
your pieces will be seen there. Also very good luck in Arizona.
Rin, as a wife and mother and artist you have so much to do! I am grateful that
you take the time to make this conversation. No need to apologize for delay in
response. Only, please, if there is any problem, and you cannot get to it for a
very long time, to let me know.
I am glad those paintings took your childhood memory. I left this meaning open
‘tell me of your island’, but it is just what I meant---tell me of the memory of
where you come from.
This experience that you had was a formative one-never leaves you,
‘I cannot feel it is complete until I lose my intention’
In my regular practice, when I am working in colors, I begin with pure color and
then let the colors compose themselves. The image (if there is an image) is the
very last member to join into the process.
My response is
“Letting the colors find their way”
I put bees wax over the water color.
Unless I proceed in this way, it is very rare that I am satisfied with the result,
unless it is a sketch. For example, the one I did called ‘the ladder’ I am not
satisfied with because I began with the central image and filled in the rest. The
feeling I have is that I want to start over.
There have been many hours that I have spent peering in the glow of a candle in
dark of night. The golden glow creates a pulsating globe that is a living thing.
There are many colors in it. You have expressed this evenesant being so well.
O I just received a phone call that a little painting of mine is accepted for a show,
‘LA VIRGEN’ for December. I am very happy about this.
All The Best to You Rin,
George
